Fine Motor Activities

Fine motor skills are important because children need strong hand muscles for daily tasks like dressing and feeding.
They use them in school for writing and drawing so providing activities for toddlers and preschoolers gives them the skills they need.

  • Cut straws into pieces and lace them onto pipe cleaners
  • Make balls out of aluminum foil or tissue paper and glue them onto paper.
  • Put small pompoms into a plastic bottle
  • Sort with buttons
  • Practice buttoning with large buttons and felt with a slit in it
  • Slide buttons through a slot in cardboard

  • Put Straws or Pipe Cleaners through holes in a colander
  • Poke pipe cleaners through holes in collander and lace buttons onto them.
  • Containers with twist on lids match
  • Remove stickers from sheet and put them on paper
  • Play dough with straws in it to lace ziti on
  • Therapy with small objects to push into it or find and remove from it
  • Write their name, a shape or lines on paper and have them cover it with vase fillers or stickers.
