Communication delay
A language delay is a type of communication disorder. If the child may have a language delays if they don’t meet the language developmental milestones for their age. Their language abilities may be developing at a slower rate than other children’s. Child may have difficulty in understanding others and expressing themselves. Their delay may involve a combination of hearing, speech and cognitive impairments. Two type of language delays are there it can be receptive language delay expressive language delay or a combination of these two. Receptive language delay happens when the child has difficulty in understanding. An expressive language delay is happens when child has difficulty in communicating verbally.
Symptoms of language delay
There are certain common symptoms for language delay. They are listed below:
- No babbling by the age of 15 months
- no talking by the age of 2 years
- inability to speak in short sentence by the age of3 years.
- great difficulty in following directions
- poor pronunciation or articulation
- difficulty in putting words together in a sentence
- Leaving words out sentences.
Causes of language delay
- Hearing impairment
- Autism
- Intellectual disability
Risk factors of language delay
- Premature birth
- Low birth weight
- Family history of speech or language problems
Having parents with lower levels of education.
