ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TREATMENT

ADD is characterized by problems with attention, impulsivity or hyperactivity. Executive functions of the brain such as verbal and non- verbal working memory, self-regulation, and motivation will be impaired. Adults who have ADD without hyperactivity can experience difficulties with maintaining attention and focus using working memory and recall and regulating emotions. Organizing and prioritizing tasks can be challenging.

SYMPTOMS

  • Often has difficulty in sustaining attention at work.
  • Easily distracted by outside stimuli.
  • Often becomes forgetful when performing routine chores.
  • Appears not to listen even when spoken to directly.
  • Often loses materials needed to complete tasks or activities.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TREATMENT

Many children with ADD will also have sensory processing disorders and this can contribute to their inability to pay attention, focus and concentrate. An occupational therapist is able to provide therapy programs that will address the sensory processing difficulties and help the child to attend and learn by adapting the environment and activities therapy programme alert programme, sensory diet, brain gym, attention activities, fine motor activities, visual perception activities, motor coordination activities, sensory techniques.
