Merits and Demerits of Applied Behaviour Analysis.

Merits

  • ABA is commonly used to treat the ASD Children.
  • From better social skills to increased intellectual abilities, and also it can help children adjust to normal life.
  • Through ABA, the therapist can modify the child’s social and emotional behaviour.
  • Through this the child can able to develop social and emotional skills that match their peers.
  • Through this approach the child can get less frustration and better communication.
  • Areas of improvement are non- verbal expression, imitation matching, expressive language and receptive language.
  • Their IQ also improved.

Demerits

  • Some detractors say that this approach is abusive, unethical and wrong.
  • According to detractors the child is not aware of their own choices in life. They do not get to choose who they are or what they want to do. Instead, they have to conform to the acceptable behaviour chosen by others.
  • Some parents are worried about stress of ABA therapy. Because of the25-40 hours of therapy each week.
  • Rewards: the parent feel very difficult in making the child involvement in activities.
